BACKGROUND ON DENTAL IMPLANTS
Dental implants are the next best things to natural teeth.
Older methods of replacing a lost tooth used surrounding teeth for support, or required uncomfortable plates. Dental implants are completely independent of the surrounding teeth, being connected to the jaw and bone of the patient.
Implants consist of a natural looking tooth, individually shaped and colour selected for the individual’s mouth, permanently attached to a titanium post inserted into the patient’s jaw. Titanium posts are used as this particular metal fuses to the surrounding bone by a process called osseointergration. The outer tooth is almost indistinguishable from a natural tooth, and the titanium post makes the procedure permanent.
HOW MANY APPOINTMENTS?
This varies, but a dental Implant usually takes three appointments. The first appointment is for x-raying and assessing the individual situation. The second appointment is the longest one; it is necessary for inserting the titanium post. The third appointment, several weeks later, is brief and painless; it attaches the external tooth to the post.
Sometimes, if there is insufficient bone in a patient’s jaw, further appointments might be necessary. The individual’s jawbone can be reinforced with a titanium frame. This frame is all but unnoticeable once the mouth has healed.
In some situations a patient many require several teeth replaced with implants. It is sometimes possible to replace several adjacent teeth after inserting only two posts into the jaw. As individual situations vary the dentist must assess each patient’s requirements individually.
AFTER SURGERY
Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how well they feel after implant surgery, and find they can return to work and other normal activities the next day.
Any risks with dental implants are very rare. Dental implants have been used for decades and proven safe, effective and very long lasting. In the rare case of an implant causing an infection any issues can be quickly resolved with medication.
Dental implants can last a lifetime with the same regular cleaning methods expected on all gums and teeth.
